*PRODUCT RECALL* – Petzl ZIGZAG mechanical Prussik

This information is complementary to and supersedes the Safety Alert issued April 19, 2013.

Summary of the facts

On Friday, April 12, Petzl was informed of an accidental fall in a training centre in Germany. This fall was related to a failure of the rope end attachment hole of the Petzl ZIGZAG mechanical Prussik.

We have since been informed of another identical failure.

These failures were the result of a particular configuration of a cantilevered and off-axis loaded upper carabiner. Petzl believes that this incorrect positioning of the connector could inadvertently occur during normal use with the potential for serious injury or death. Continued use of the ZIGZAG poses a risk of serious injury or death.

Petzl Action Plan

Petzl has decided to immediately recall all ZIGZAGs.

As a measure of precaution, we ask that you:

• Immediately stop using the ZIGZAG
• For the UK and Ireland, please contact the distributor using zigzag@lyon.co.uk or 015396 24040; they will then send you an S.A.E. at their cost to allow the return of your ZIGZAG.

You can then choose from the following options:

• A complete refund at the purchase price (including taxes and shipping)
• Replacement for other Petzl products (total equal to the retail price of the ZIGZAG + 30%)

Just in – the ISC ZK2 Rope Wrench!

The ZK2 Rope Wrench is a friction device that allows a climber to ascend, descend and work on a single rope (SRT) with a friction hitch.

Developed by Kevin Bingham of Singing Tree, a well-known Arborist from the USA, the ZK2 has been developed as the first mass market ‘Friction Management Device’. With the help of ISC, it is now mid-line attachable, lightweight and rope-friendly with curved edges and a pulley wheel.

It’s not too late to give!

We weren’t going to let the weather spoil our chances of raising lots of money for Help for Heroes and it seems all our climbers were of the same mind – we achieved 168 climbs on the Friday and 76 on the Saturday. This makes a total of 244 50ft climbs, which is not only equivalent to the 3 peaks (11,131ft), but with the Shard (1015ft) on top!

We raised a very respectable £805 at the show, topped up by FR Jones and Son to £850, and have since received individual donations bringing the current total to £1100.
